Poverty

I think, there is a lot of poverty nowadays. For me this mean that people don't have food, clothes and home. In the past there were a lot of poor people too. Our ancestors lived in poverty, beacuse life in past was less luxurious than today. However, they fought for bread. Today poverty is more painful beacuse a lot of people have good life. Parents want to make their children's life easier (with clothes, food, tehnical things, …). We help people in distress quite a lot. Organizations like Karitas and Red Cross take care of this. Different events for raising money are organized. TV shows help too. In the past there was more help. We hope, that if one day we need help, others will help us too.

Poverty

The concept of povety, what does this mean to us? On such occasions we usually think about people, who can't live in dignity.
Poverty also means children, who are homeless and hungry wandering with a desire to survive. However, we aren't talking only of material poverty, many people long for love. How will they feel the solidarity and motherhood, if they had never experienced them? In difficult moments they couldn't trust their mother and father.
Even the homeless we sometimes think, that they are fake. But do we think about them, where are they at nights, when we get back to our warm homes? They sleep in the back streets or on benches in parks. It seems disgusting to us, but this is their only solution. But we never think that this can happen to us too.
In Africa, orphans are left to themselves. Barely gatherings, already protect their sisters and brothers. Happy, if they have only one meal in day. The possibility to go to school, isn't given to anyone. Large families are struggling for days to earn a cup of rice. Although a large deficiency they encourage. Poverty requires a high tax. People in desperation steal just to get to jail, because they get a warm meal there.
Taking all of this, imagine how much food we have, abundance, love now when millions of people are waiting for our goodness. Let us have at least bit of compassion.We mustn`t forget that we can be in their place tomorrow.

Raising money

In january our students were making masks. They were selling the masks in a week before the Carnival. We also organized workshops for younger students and a Carnival dance. The pupils raised quite a lot of money which will be spent for school supplies for students whose parents can't afford them.Here are some photos.

Yes, the deadline is 30th April, but I think that the materials should get to the webdesigner at least one week before; I know, from my last year's experience, that working on the site is very time consuming and it takes a lot of effort!

I'm trying to put everything in order and I hope I will be ready by Monday 19th. Most of my students' work is in word documents, so I will post the texts on the blog; we also have pictures and 2 short films (.avi or .wmv). They will be on the blog, too. We are working on our web site with our students, but you know this is not a problem to share our working with and comminicate each other.. :) we have a blog, and we still need a banner, title etc.. we can see our work on the blog and we can decide which one is better..And we have a limited time..

I think our first need is title and banner.. You can send more than one drawing about poverty and we can get together them with photoshop.. And color is important.. Downloading to blog is easier than web site, If you can download your work to our blog, we can collect them and download to web site..
Our students have got a lot of letter from their friends and they help other children periodically. We takes all their photos to share with you.. And Aykut, one of our student, made a film about poverty with pictures getting from google seaching, you can see it on our blog.. And our students made presentations about poverty to share with their friends..

Oh yes, we are working hard to put everything in order... essays, pps, films, pictures... we are still on the Easter holiday, but on Monday we are starting school and the activities for the project. Tomorrow we are visiting some children in hospital... just to offer them some toys, clothes, books and maybe some comfort... they are children with epilepsy, many of them come from needy families and they have to spend a lot of time in the hospital...

We would like to donate 200 euros, which we collected to one of your friends school in Hakkari. We do not want to give this money to one of our charity organization. Ours schools are not poor, because state carry financialy for all schools in the country, so every school get the same amounth of money. So it is hard to say which school is poor in Slovenia. Sorry, I'm a bit late but I've had a lot of work at school lately as,I suppose, we all have … We have been working on our activities and Iam going to put some of our students' pictures and essays on our blog .
• Problem 1
As I told you in my prevoius mail, we have the material we need forthe first step of our project - presentation of the team members; Unfortunately, we were not able to access the questions for thePoverty Survey, as you sent it to us as a .docx. And it was only a fewdays ago when I realized they had been posted on our blog!!! I amstill not used to using the blog (I simply forgot about it!!!), but Iam learning :))) In future, if you want to send word documents on thee-mail, will you please save them with the extention .doc? I'm sorry, I was in such a hurry to send you those questions that I didn't realize that I saved them in Word 2007 format. Won't happen again (I hope ;).
• Problem 2
We couldn't establish a conntact with the poor school in Romania weintented to. Just as I told you before, the Ministry of Health and theMinistry of Education forbade any school activities which involvedmeetings or any gatherings, for fear of the swine flu! We collectedthings and money though, but we gave everything to a Charityorganization (Salvati copiiii = Save the Children,www.salvaticopiii.ro), one that is in charge with the administrationof such donations. Of course we took some pictures of our childrenduring the activity. We still haven't given up the idea of meeting thepoor pupils from a village school, but this might not happen very soon.It would be easier for us to raise money if we know exactly where itis going. So if you have the address of the school you were going toget in contact with, we would really want you to send us the address,so we could send the supplies directly to them. Our students arepreparing a carneval dance for the whole school so every pupil and teacher wil be able to contribute some money for this cause. I have collected some essays about poverty and two of my students are working on a powerpoint presentation about poverty around the world. Iwill send the materials when they are ready. But who shall I send themto??? Who is going to organize all the materials? Shall just post themon the blog? This is something I would like to know too. Fulda? We prepared a lot of masks for karneval and we are going to sell them to our students - so in this way we are planning to collect the money. We have come across some problems:

Problem 1

We are going to start to collect money for less privileged schools in your countries. Can you, please, send us the addresses of the schools you picked in Romania and Turkey?
We are organizing a carnival dance on February 16th therefore we need the addresses of the schools as soon as possible, because we are preparing the posters and invitations and the names of the schools should be in it.

In my last e-mail I told you that I will follow this plan:
1. The Team;
2. Facts and official statistics on poverty;
3. Students' essays on poverty;
4. Taking action- what we do to combate poverty (volunteer work, donations, visits to daycare centers or poor school, etc)

What we have done so far:

1. I will get back to you with presentations of our students. We already have them
2. I am trying to prepare a material contain official data, statistics or facts about poverty. But I still have problems finding the right questions for a survey on poverty :(
3. Students have also started to send their essays on poverty, but I have to check them first. We are still working on that.
4. Right now we are collecting things to be donated to a daycare centre. On Monday we will have some pictures, too. Unfortunately we cannot organize any trips or visits to other school, because The Ministry of Health has forbidden activities like these, for fear the students might catch the new flu!!!

I can hardly wait for the holiday to come!!! (16-the Dec to 4-the Jan) Maybe I will have more time to work on this project... Unfortunately we have had a lot of problems because of the new flu and our school was closed for a week (three children were ill, but they recovered quickly). To make things worse, the government also forced as to have 6 days off from work, unpaid of course, just to cut down on their expenses and get some money for the state budget!!! This means even less money for teachers! Right before Christmas!!! Ah! And this Sunday the second round of presidential elections is taking places, a terrible show which seems to divide the whole country into two!!!
So you see, things are not going on great here, but we are holding on :) Maybe the Christmas spirit will get us in a better mood and we will forget about all our worries...

Hello from Romania, too!

I'm sure you've been waiting for my reply anxiously, wondering why it is not coming sooner :) but all my plans have been ruined by the new flu (swain flu or H1N1)!!! All extracurricular activities have been posponed and several schools have been closed because of students falling ill. Our school has been lucky so far, but who knows what will happen???
I have two children of my own (5 and 3 years old), they go to a public kindergarten and I must tell you that I am really worried about this flu :(((

But... let's be optimistic and get back to work now :)

In my previous e-mail I tried to summarize all the ideas about this project in a short plan which look like this (at least for us, the Romanian team):

1. The team - presentations of schools, students and teachers
2. Poverty in statics and official reports - the survey and other reports
3. Poverty in our eyes, thoughts and hearts - Students about poverty and social exclusion (drawings, essays, interviews, films, PowerPoint presentations, photos,etc)
4. A helping hand for our future - what we do to help people in need, or to change the present situation in order to have a better future
5. Dialogue Room - our communication: e-mail exchanges, videoconferences, etc

What we have done so far:

1. The team

- we have managed to prepare our presentations, though we haven't quite finished yet;

2. Poverty in statics and official reports

- we have done some research (reports, statistics, articles, internet, etc), in order to get factual information about poverty; we are working on a ppt presentation about the global problem of poverty and hunger; we haven't thought of questions for a survey yet;

3. Poverty in our eyes, thoughts and hearts

- students are working on their essays and drawings

4. A helping hand for our future

- unfortunately, the proposed trip to a poor village school is not going to take place for the moment, as all the trips, visits or festivities or shows have been cancelled because of the A(H1N1); I still hope we can do it later, maybe in late February or march, just in time to post the results of the visit on the site... in the meantime, we have to find something else to prove involvement in the process of combating poverty...

- this week - 14-21 Nov- we are organizing different activities for The Global Education Week 2009; the topic of this year is Food for All; we are collecting toys, clothes, books and other things, which will be donated to Day Care Centres for children coming from poor families; we are also going to have a classroom debate on the topic mentioned before

5. Dialogue Room - we do have gmail accounts; I will make a list of all the addresses (students and teachers involved in the project) and send it to you.


As you can see, I write a lot, so that's why it takes me so long to answer you :))) Now my final thoughts for the time being:
Just like Mirjam and Meta, I think the title "A Helping Hand for the Future" is appropriate.
If you want to agree on a deadline for each of the steps mentioned above, just let me know. I usually work more efficiently if I know that I have to be ready by that time :))) So... when shall we finish and send the materials for the first activity, the introduction of the students? Once we have done this, we can go on with the rest of the activities and decide on other deadlines (for statistics, surveys, essays, drawings, presentations- they are already in progress)

Now for Fulda: if I understood correctly, you are going to take care of the webhosting and design, so I suppose it is you that we should be sending the materials to. Am I right? Which means that the deadline for each step should be much of your decision, as I am aware of the time and effort it takes to work on a site.

That's all for now. Hoping that I everything will turn back to normal very soon, and that we will work with no more obstacles,

Sorry, we are a bit late. Last week of October we were on holidays and last week we had a lot of work.

Our students are going to perform on a school concert and collect some money for them. This is going to be one of activity at our school. We will take photos and shoot video.

3. About web site:
We can host our project website on our shool web site.. As computer club, we can take responsibilities and all helps are wellcome. We can decide design together, and begin to download informations..

We have an idea for the web site layout. I'll send it to you and you will see what you can do about it.
